A cookie is a file that is downloaded to your computer when you access certain web pages. Cookies allow a web page to, among other things, store and retrieve information about a user's browsing habits or their device and, depending on the information they contain and how the device is used, they can be used to recognize the user.
Depending on who manages the domain from which the cookies are sent and processes the data obtained, two types can be distinguished: first-party cookies and third-party cookies. There is also a second classification according to the duration they remain stored in the client's browser, which may be session cookies or persistent cookies. Lastly, there is another classification with five types of cookies according to the purpose for which the obtained data is processed: technical cookies, personalization cookies, analysis cookies, advertising cookies, and behavioural advertising cookies.
As stated in the "Guide on the use of cookies" by the AEPD, according to the entity that manages the cookies, we can distinguish between:
First-party cookies: These are sent to the user's terminal equipment from a computer or domain managed by the editor and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
Third-party cookies: These are sent to the user's terminal equipment from a computer or domain that is not managed by the editor but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.
Also, according to the purpose for which the data obtained through the cookies is processed, we can distinguish between:
Technical cookies: These allow the user to navigate through a web page, platform, or application and use the different options or services that exist on it, such as controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted areas, remembering the items that make up an order, completing the purchase process, making a request for registration or participation in an event, using security elements during navigation, storing content for the dissemination of videos or sound, or sharing content through social networks.
Personalization cookies: These allow the user to access the service with some predefined general characteristics based on a series of criteria in the user's terminal, such as language, the type of browser through which they access the service, the regional configuration from which they access the service, etc.
Analysis cookies: These allow the responsible party to track and analyze the behaviour of users of the websites they are linked to. The information collected through these types of cookies is used to measure the activity of websites, applications, or platforms and to create browsing profiles of users of these sites, applications, and platforms, in order to make improvements based on the analysis of the usage data of the users of the service.
Advertising cookies: These allow for the most efficient management of advertising spaces that, where appropriate, the editor has included on a web page, application, or platform from which the requested service is provided based on criteria such as the edited content or the frequency at which ads are displayed.
Behavioural advertising cookies: These allow for the most efficient management of advertising spaces that, where appropriate, the editor has included on a web page, application, or platform from which the requested service is provided. These cookies store information on user behaviour obtained through continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows for the development of a specific profile to display advertising based on it.
Lastly, according to the duration of time they remain activated, we can distinguish between:
Session cookies: These are designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a web page. They are usually used to store information that only needs to be kept for the provision of the service requested by the user on a single occasion (e.g., a list of purchased products) and disappear at the end of the session.
Persistent cookies: These are those in which the data remains stored in the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the person responsible for the cookie, which can range from a few minutes to several years.
The data will be retained for the time necessary to fulfil the purposes for which they were collected unless the user requests deletion by emailing EKOMERCIAL@EKOAKUA.COM, opposing, or revoking their consent.
